Find information, resources, and support so that you can succeed in the hospital and rehabilitation sectors. Learn how OPA is advocating on behalf of physiotherapists and physiotherapist assistants at hospitals and rehabilitation centres.
Recruitment and retention
OPA takes every opportunity to advocate for the positive impact of increasing funding for physiotherapists in the hospital setting on the overall health system, human resource challenges that were exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to persist. OPA also advocates for the need to evolve models of care to optimize efficiency and retain physiotherapists.
Mentorship & support
As hospitals and rehabilitation centres hire physiotherapists to mitigate the impact of a Health Human Resource crisis, there is an increasing need for comprehensive onboarding and mentorship to increase retention and improve care outcomes. One strategy is to increase the number of physiotherapists in management and leadership positions (OPA supports physiotherapists in pursuing these roles).
Scope of practice
OPA has been relentlessly pressuring the government to complete the implementation of scope of practice changes that passed through legislation more than 15 years ago, including enabling the authority for physiotherapists to order diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests.
The Hospital Advisory Committee is made up of volunteer members who advise OPA staff and the Board of Directors on issues affecting physiotherapy practice in hospitals and rehabilitation centres across Ontario.
This committee ensures that the interests and concerns of physiotherapists in these settings are heard and considered in policy decisions.
