Voting Delegates

What is a Voting Delegate?

The Ontario Physiotherapy Association’s by-laws indicate how members participate and vote on the business of OPA. Specifically, districts appoint voting delegates from among physiotherapist members, and physiotherapist student members registered in their district.

These voting delegates represent the district at any OPA meeting of members. This includes our Annual Members Meeting. Each voting delegate gets 1 vote to cast.

The number of voting delegates in each district corresponds to the number of physiotherapist members and physiotherapist student members in that district as follows:

Number of PT and PT student members of districtNumber of voting delegates
10 – 175 members2 voting delegates
176 – 300 members   4 voting delegates
For each additional 100 Members or portion of 100 Members 1 voting delegate

See this year’s allotted number of voting delegates per district. The total number of possible voting delegates this year is 76.

What Do Voting Delegates Do?

The main responsibility of a voting delegate is to participate and vote on the business of OPA at our Annual Members Meeting. This year’s meeting is taking place virtually on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 7:00-8:30pm.

Voting delegates act as representatives of their district. They are encouraged to be well-informed about the Association’s and district’s activities and issues within the physiotherapy profession.

At the Annual Members Meeting, voting delegates vote on the election of new directors, receive OPA’s audited financial statements among other business. They are also invited to ask questions of the Board Directors and CEO.

Materials are pre-circulated to voting delegates, including Board candidate information and financial statements. Voting delegates are expected to read materials in advance of the AMM and to attend the AMM prepared.

How Do You Become a Voting Delegate?

If you are an OPA member and would like to express your interest in being a voting delegate, please contact your District President. You can find your district president on our district page. District presidents decide who will represent their district.

You can also contact Prerna Tawde at ptawde@opa.on.ca to indicate your interest in being a voting delegate.

Districts without District Presidents (Durham, Niagara, Northwestern Ontario)

If you would like to be a voting delegate, but your district does not have a District President, please contact Prerna Tawde at ptawde@opa.on.ca to express your interest. Include your full name, OPA membership number, and your district. Your interest will be presented to the Governance Committee and once approved, you will be registered as a voting delegate and will be provided with the meeting link and delegate package.

If you are an OPA member and would like to attend the AMM as a non-voting delegate, stay tuned for more information.
